These interesting hand carved household shrines are placed over or near doorways, containing an image of Ganesha as 'the remover of obstacles', or other locally appropriate deity.They are made of a solid, dense wood with a beautiful patina and are of varying intricacy depending on the skill of the carver. They are sadly being rapidly replaced by modern plastic or metal shrines in the homes of modern India.Some of these charming shrines appear very old, whilst some are of more recent date.
